Thomson Foundation Mobile Journalism Competition 2020( Win trip to Mojofest in London)

Overview:

The Thomson Foundation mobile journalism competition is a leading showcase for mobile journalism( ‘ mojo’) talent, in partnership with Mojofest. This challenge is all about learning and doing. You’ll need to take part in, and complete, a combination of online courses on mobile journalism and then make a film entirely on a smartphone.

It’s a rigorous competition. Workshops will run throughout March and then, by the end, you’ll be required to produce a video portrait of a change maker in your community.

Winner Prize:

The judges will pick the best stories with the overall winner receiving an all-expenses-paid trip to Mojofest in London between 13-14 May, 2020. At least five others will be shortlisted for outstanding content and each participant who completes the program will be issued with a certificate of achievement.

What will Participant do?

The competition is a great opportunity to build and develop your video production and storytelling skills. Entrants will follow step by step exercises under the guidance of the foundation’s finest trainers and mentors. You will be required to learn to use a mobile phone to:

  • Capture quality images and videos
  • Capture quality audio
  • Film a video interview
  • Edit video
  • Tell a story using video
  • Capture and express emotion through image and video

Requirements:

In order to take part of the competition, you will need to complete four specific assignments, one each week throughout March 2020. These will include the following task:

  • The competition is open to entrants aged 18 or over.
  • Only one entry per person
  • Participate in our global photowalk and share with us your top photos
  • Create and share two video sequences
  • Record and share an interview
  • Create and publish a video story on a change-making member of your community

The competition includes taking part in and producing e-learning content, interactive lives and feedback with our experts, peer to peer interaction, as well as submitting video work.

The Way to Win:

Participants will be scored for a mixture of work completed in the duration of the competition and the final film produced. Judges will consider the following criteria:

  • Your submissions (50%)
  • Your successful completion of at least one of the mojo courses available: (30%)
  • Your feedback and engagement with your peers (20%)

Program Procedure:

  • Week one ( 2 March 2020 ): Telling stories with images by joining our global photowalk, learn how to take good photographs and share your best.
  • Week two ( 9 March 2020): Storytelling and Video sequences by using your image-capturing skills to create powerful videos.
  • Week three (16 March 2020): Video interview and audio by getting close to your subject and share their voice.
  • Week four ( 23 March 2020): Editing and publishing by bringing it all together and tell amazing stories.

International Writing Competition 2020 in UK

Bristol Short Story Prize – an annual international writing competition open to all published and unpublished, UK and non-UK based writers.

They publish an annual anthology of the winning stories as well as presenting cash prizes. 20 stories will be shortlisted and published in Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology Volume 13 by Tangent BooksThe winner and 2 runners up will be selected from the shortlist and announced at an awards ceremony which will be held in Bristol in October 2020.

Prize:

  • The Samson Award will be presented to the highest placed story by a Bristol writer.
  • 1st prize is £1,000
  • 2nd prize is £500
  • 3rd prize is £250
  • 17 further prizes of £100 will be presented to the remaining shortlisted writers

Rules:

  1. Closing date for receipt of entries is April 30th 2020 at midnight BST (‘midnight’ meaning the very last second of April 30th 2020).
  2. Entrants must be over 16 years old on the closing date, April 30th 2020.
  3. The maximum length of submissions is 4,000 words (does not include title), there is no minimum length. Stories can be on any theme or subject and are welcome in any style including graphic, verse or genre-based (Crime, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Historical, Romance, Children’s etc..) .
  4. The 2020 Bristol Short Story Prize is open to all published and unpublished writers. There is no geographical restriction on entry – the 2020 Bristol Short Story Prize is open to everyone, whether they are based in the UK or outside the UK. Entries can be made online or by post.  All entries must be in English. Online entries should be submitted via the online entry facility, usually in Word document, pdf or equivalent. Postal entries will only be accepted as printed typescripts. There are no specific formatting requirements: font type, font size, line spacing etc. Writers may format their work in the way they feel is most appropriate – we do not specify any particular format for submissions.   5. Authors may enter as many stories as they like. There is an entry fee of £9 for each story submitted to the 2020 Bristol Short Story Prize. Payment for online entries to the 2020 Bristol Short Story Prize should be made via the website online entry facility. Entrants will be transferred to the Paypal website after they have submitted their story/stories to the 2020 Bristol Short Story Prize to pay the entry fee. Payment for postal entries to the 2020 Bristol Short Story Prize should be made by cheque. Cheque payments must be in pounds sterling and cheques should be made payable to ‘Bristol Short Story Prize Ltd.’. Each postal submission must be accompanied by a signed entry form confirming an entrant has read the rules of the 2020 Bristol Short Story Prize and accepts the rules of the 2020 Bristol Short Story Prize.
  6. Entries will not be returned. Please keep a copy. No corrections or alterations can be made after receipt of an entry.
  7. Entries must be entirely the work of the entrant and must never have been previously published, in print or online (including self-published, ebook, magazines, journals, websites, blogs, social network sites), or broadcast or won a prize in another writing competition on or before October 10th 2020. Any entry found to have been plagiarised will be disqualified.   8. Entries will be read and judged anonymously; entrants’ names and contact details should only appear on the entry form and not anywhere on their stories/manuscripts. The stories/manuscripts must be free of all personal information about the author. This includes age and address.
  9. If entrants require acknowledgement of receipt of a postal entry they must enclose a stamped addressed postcard marked ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. Online entries will be acknowledged by email.   10. Entries will be read by a panel of publishers, booksellers, reviewers and writers. They will select a longlist of 40 stories for the judging panel. The judging panel will select the 20 stories to be published in the Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology Volume 13 and the top 3 prize winning stories for the 2020 Bristol Short Story Prize. The judges’ decision is final and no individual correspondence will be entered into. Judges or readers will not comment on individual stories or give feedback on individual stories.
  11. The 2020 Bristol Short Story Prize judging panel is: Billy Kahora (writer, creative writing lecturer), Sharmaine Lovegrove (award-winning publisher), Anneliese Mackintosh (award-winning writer) and Tom Robinson (manager of Foyles Bookshop, Bristol).
  12. All entrants must agree to have their work published in the Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology Volume 13, in both print and ebook formats, should they be the author of one of the 20 stories that are shortlisted for the 2020 Bristol Short Story Prize. Authors will retain worldwide copyright on their work (including film and dramatic rights) but Bristol Short Story Prize has first publication rights to publish the 20 shortlisted stories in the Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology Volume 13. Tangent Books will publish the 20 shortlisted stories in both print and ebook formats on October 10th 2020. Each of the 2020 Bristol Short Story Prize shortlisted authors will receive 2 free copies of the paperback version of Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology Volume 13 and will be able to purchase further copies at a discount of 50%. All 2020 Bristol Short Story prize shortlisted writers will be able to purchase any number of copies of any volume of Bristol Short Story Prize Anthologies at a discount of 50%.
  15. Prizes for 2020 are: 1st prize-£1000, 2nd prize -£500, 3rd prize -£250. Each of the 17 remaining shortlisted writers will receive £100. An additional prize of £100, The Sansom Award, in recognition of the contribution to Bristol publishing of John and Angela Sansom, will be presented to the highest placed story by a Bristol writer. If no story by a Bristol writer is selected for the 2020 Bristol Short Story Prize longlist, Bristol Short Story Prize reserve the right not to present the Sansom Award. Imagine what an ideal world ten years from now would be like. Write a letter from yourself in 2030 to your present (2020) self, in which you describe the state of the world, the way people are living, and what you, yourself, are doing in society. In addition, include any important message that you might wish to tell your present self.

Guidelines:

  1. Essays may be submitted by anyone up to 25 years old (as of June 15, 2020) in one of the following age categories: a) Children (ages up to 14) b) Youth (ages 15 – 25)
  2. Essays must be 700 words or less in English, French, Spanish or German, or 1600 characters or less in Japanese, excluding essay title and cover page. Essays may be typed or printed.
  3. INTERNATIONAL ECO-HERO AWARDS FOR YOUNG ENVIRONMENTALISTS

Every year since 2003, Action For Nature (AFN), a U.S.-based non-profit, has sought to recognize and reward young people who are taking action to solve the world’s tough environmental problems. We are proud to honor the work of young people between the ages of 8 and 16 all over the globe who have done creative environmental projects with a cash prize, certificate of achievement, and public recognition.

PRIZES

Please read the Application Guidelines to see if you are eligible to apply to become a Young Eco-Hero.
If you or someone you know is eligible, encourage them to apply.

  • Have you been working to preserve the world around you?
  • Have you been teaching others how to protect the environment?
  • Have you been doing an environmental research project?

If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then you are a Young Eco-Hero. All Eco-Heroes serve as role models, showing others that individuals are important and can make a difference.

JUDGING

Preference is given to projects of 2+ years and/or ongoing projects.

The applications will be judged according to several criteria, including but not limited to:

  • originality
  • difficulty
  • organization
  • length of time devoted to the project
  • influencing/educating others
  • use of outside resources (e.g. library, experts, media, community leaders)
  • degree of success in reaching goals
  • the impact on the environment
